Starting January 2025, ABLS Instructor Courses will no longer be managed by the ABA central office or require ABA staff attendance. Organizations can now request and host an ABLS Instructor Course, provided they have properly trained National Faculty to teach it.

Follow these steps to submit and manage your course:

Step 1: Source Your National Faculty

  1. Qualifications for National Faculty:

    • Only National Faculty who have completed the webinar and are “T4 trained” may teach Instructor Courses.

  2. Faculty Requirements Based on Class Size:

    • 1–6 participants: One National Faculty required.

    • 7–15 participants: Two National Faculty required.

    • Courses cannot exceed 15 participants.

  3. Preparation:

    • Ensure all National Faculty teaching the course are familiar with the guidelines.

  4. If You Don’t Have National Faculty On-Site:

    • Use the Coordinator and Instructor Communities on MyAmeriburn to source a qualified National Faculty member.

    • Travel and lodging expenses must be negotiated between the requesting organization and the National Faculty. The ABA does not reimburse for these expenses.

Step 2: Requesting the Course

  1. Identify National Faculty:

    • Confirm the National Faculty member(s) who will teach the course.

  2. Submit the Course Request Form:

    • The ABLS Coordinator should submit the request on the ABA member site.

    • Include “Instructor Course” next to the date.

    • Specify which National Faculty member should receive roster updates.

  3. ABA Staff Processing:

    • ABA staff will process the request, add the course to the system, and provide:

      • The registration link.

      • Hosting instructions.

Step 3: Preparing for the Course

Two Weeks Before the Course:

  1. Send Welcome Email:

    • Include the slide assignments and the slide deck (available in the Instructor team on the ABA learning platform).

  2. Assign Slides:

    • Use the provided slide assignment template.

    • For larger classes, distribute additional chapters so each participant presents about eight slides

Make sure that all participants are presenting ABLS course content and have not been assigned welcome and introduction slides.

Email Template:

Please use this template when sending the pre-course email. This template can also be found in the National Faculty Library.

We recommend verifying that registrants meet the eligibility requirements during the enrollment process to avoid last-minute drops from the course. If you have any questions about eligibility, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us at abls@ameriburn.org.

The Day of the Course

1. Set Up:

  • AV Requirements:

    • Same as ABLS Live: laptop, podium, projector, and screen.

    • Microphones likely not needed for smaller courses.

  • Course Materials:

    • Download and review the instructor course slides before the course begins. Materials are available in the ABLS National Faculty myAmeriburn community library.

  • Room Setup:

    • Classroom-style seating.

    • For courses with more than six participants, ensure space to split into two smaller groups for case study and patient assessment practice. This can be done in the same room or an additional breakout room.

  • Additional Items Needed:

    • Moulage dummies for case studies and patient assessments.

    • Paper and pens/pencils for National Faculty to take notes on candidates.

    • Print copies of the slide assignments for National Faculty, with space for presentation notes.

2. Post-Course Tasks:

  • ABA staff will send a close-out email, similar to an ABLS Live course.

  • Once the roster is finalized, your organization will be invoiced $375 per participant.

    • Note: ABA does not take payment directly from participants.

  • Coordinators:

    • Contact course participants to guide them on their next steps as ABLS Instructor Candidates:

      1. The Instructor Candidates must be observed teaching twice.

      2. Submit their applications after completing observations.

When deciding how often to host instructor courses, consider how many instructor candidates your organization can feasibly handle observing in a year. If you have too many candidates, you run the risk of having to arrange their observations at other organizations or bring in more National Faculty to observe them, which can become costly.
